Sabbatical Planning - Additional Guidelines & Resources

Sabbatical leave is a carefully planned period of time, usually three months after the first seven years service in a diocesan-related ministry, in which the lay professional or clergy is granted leave away from normal duties in order to spend an extended period of time in study, reflection, and renewal.  Click here for the complete guidelines.

In response to the revised Canons of the Episcopal Church, General Convention, 2003, Title 3, Canon 7.5, p. 65 (Life and Work of Deacons) and Canon 9. 1, p. 72 (Life and Work of Priests), the Continuing Education Subcommittee of the Commission on Ministry was formed to prepare continuing education guidelines specific to the Diocese of Michigan.

It is clear that all ordained persons are to be included in the canonical requirements. The Diocese of Michigan clergy are invited to comply with this National Canon as part of honoring and respecting the vows taken at ordination to “be diligent in the reading and study of the Holy Scriptures, and in seeking the knowledge of such things as may make (clergy) stronger and more able to (be a) minister of Christ.”
