Pilgrimage to The Holy Land
November 14-25, 2019
The Diocese of Michigan is planning a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. We will stay at St. George’s Anglican College in Jerusalem and visit many of the most significant places in Jesus’ life and ministry including Bethlehem, the Jordan River, Capernaum, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and many more.
The current trip is fully booked and we have nine on the waiting list! If you would like to be added to the next pilgrimage, please email Rev. Vicki Hesse at email@example.com.
Important documents for our 2019 trip:
- Jordan Itinerary (optional trip)
- Packing List (to be provided later)
- Reading List
- Schedule of Payments (below)
The best group rate we could find is on the high side. Some folks have found less expensive seats by booking individually. That is fine, but you will need to arrange your own transportation to and from St. George’s Guest House in East Jerusalem. Please make sure you arrive on November 15. We don’t know much about that, but will see what we can find out. Those who go with the group will be met at the airport and brought to St. George’s.
- If you do decide not to fly with us, please let me know as soon as you can. This will affect our group reservation. Facebook page for updates:We have also created a Facebook page to make it easier to share information. You can find it HERE. Please “like” it and visit often. We have posted our itinerary, the YouTube recording of our information session, and a reading list. Roommates list:We will be sending a preliminary rooming list to Iyad this week. We have a few single pilgrims who may wish to share a room. We will send you a separate email with contact information. Please let us know what you decide as soon as you can. There is a surcharge for single rooms. Schedule of Payments:
Due by Double (per person) Single Deposit 300 300 8/1/19 1/2 remaining 1975 2245 10/1/19 Balance 1975 2245 Total 4250 4790
You have already paid the deposit of $300. That was refundable until February 28. If your plans change or if you have any doubts, let us know if you are definitely coming. We will need half of your remaining payment by August 1 and the balance by October 1. These figures include the pilgrimage, the flights, your rooms and all meals while we are in Israel/Palestine. They do not include meals while traveling to and from our destination.
We will have two meetings before the pilgrimage. The purpose is to meet each other and discover ways to prepare ourselves spiritually for this experience. The purpose is to meet each other and to prepare spiritually. The Rev. Vicki Hesse will lead us in a reflection on pilgrimage and we will share some middle eastern food. The location will be St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 200 W St. Paul St., Brighton, MI 48116. The dates of those gatherings are:
- May 8, 2019 from 7-9 pm
- Sept. 19, 2019 from 7-9 pm
If you have any questions about any of this, please contact The Whitaker Institute.
The cost of the trip, excluding airfare, is $2,500 and includes accommodations, three meals a day, a tour bus and driver, all entrance fees and our wonderful tour guide. It also includes trip insurance and a chartered bus to and from the airport in Toronto. There is a $540 additional fee if you want a single room. All other rooms are doubles with two twin beds. You are responsible for buying your own souvenirs. It is too early to tell what airfare will cost. In 2016 we saved quite a bit by traveling from Toronto. If we were traveling this November, the cost of round-trip airfare would be about $1100.
is it safe?
Yes! Our guide, Iyad, has led over a hundred groups of Episcopalians over the years and has never had a problem. He is a native of the area and knows how to avoid any potential trouble spots. Our group in 2016 felt totally safe at every moment.
How large will the group be?
The size of the goup is limited to 20 – 35 people.
How strenuous is it?
We do a lot of walking, sometimes up hills and over uneven ground. It is important to be in reasonably good shape, able to walk a couple of miles. In our last group we had several pilgrims with significant mobility issues and they were able to participate in most of our activities, though once or twice they stayed on the bus and met us after a walk.
Is there Hummus?
Oh yes. Hummus is served with every meal!
