EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY

Education for Ministry (EfM) lives in the School of Theology at the University of the South at Sewanee. It is a unique four-year small-group formation program based on study and practice in theological reflection. Since its founding in 1975, this international program has assisted more than 120,000 participants discover and nurture their call to Christian service where they live, work, and play. EfM helps the faithful discover the Christian tradition, bringing it into conversation with their experiences of the world. EfM seminar groups meet in onsite and online, all in person, developing theologically informed, reflective, and articulate seekers of God.

Archdeacon Tim Spannaus and Veronica Griffith, certified EfM mentors, facilitate the EfM seminar that meets weekly, on Mondays from 7 to 9 pm on zoom. Alongside reading the Bible, learn how to do theological reflection to understand how Scripture, our Christian tradition, our society/culture, and our stories can inform how we view God and live out our lives as people of faith. Currently there are 6 participants from several congregations in this group with openings for six more participants.

Education for Ministry classes start in Fall. Lay-persons face the difficult and often subtle task of interpreting the richness of the church’s faith in a complex and confusing world. They need a theological education that supports their faith and helps them to connect that faith to their daily lives. The EfM program provides people with an opportunity to discover how to respond to the call to Christian service and carry out their ministries.
