About the Whitaker Institute

The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.
-Proverbs 18:15
The Whitaker Institute activates lifelong learning! We are the educational arm of the Bishop’s office and our purpose is to educate, equip and empower faith communities with fresh ways of learning.

MISSION

The Whitaker Institute is the educational arm of the Diocese of Michigan.  Our overall purpose is to form disciples to carry on the ministry of Jesus Christ. We do this by educating, equipping and empowering members of our faith community with lifelong formation, so that they can grow in their knowledge, mature in their faith and become better equipped for the unique ministries to which they are called.

VISION

The Whitaker Institute for education imagines the Episcopal Church community of faith where:
  • Every parish is equipped with the tools and motivation to offer foundational education (baptismal, catechetical, Episcopal church) and faith formation in their own context,
  • Those persons discerned for ordained ministries are academically, spiritually and practically prepared, as required through canons and Commission on Ministry to serve the wider church,
  • Lay persons are fostered in discerning their call to serve Christ and do God’s work in the world,
  • Lay persons participate in group spiritual direction that guides discernment for God’s call on their lives,
  • Lay persons engage in formation in lay pastoral and social activism ministries,
  • Clergy persons participate in lifelong education and empowerment for pastoral, prophetic and priestly/diaconal distinctions in their ministry,
  • Parish leaders gain insights and implement canonically required formation programs that create healthy environments of vibrant faith communities
  • Communication about educational, inspirational and formative events are fostered between the parishes, the diocese and the wider Episcopal Church
